CULTURE - Hidden treasures await

Crans-Montana is a destination with a story to tell, full of history and popular Valais traditions that travellers can disco - ver at the Grand-Lens museum, the Château de Vaas, and the Colombire Ecomuseum. All cultural tastes are admired, appreciated and shared here. Examples of our cultural diversity include: a museum of model trains for all the family; the Fondation Opale in Lens, which aims to create a permanent dialogue between aboriginal and contemporary art; the Vision Art Festival, which has helped to draw urban art away from large cities and into the heart of the Alps; and of course, the five galleries of Crans-Montana. Music, from popular to classical right through to electro, can also be heard at numerous concerts, events and festivals throughout the year.

Crans-Montana Classics

Symbiosis of Arts and Nature

Crans-Montana Classics, the enchantment of music and the intoxication of the mountains, a perfect symbiosis between Arts and Nature.

The traditional Easter Concert will put the Czech Republic in the spotlight, with a performance by the Valéik Philharmonik Orchestra and the Oracantat Choir. Conducted by the dynamic Sébastien Bagnoud, they will let you discover or rediscover works by German and Czech composers.

In August and September, quality ensembles and soloists will offer eclectic concerts, including a major event on the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club Ballesteros course. Master Classes, which aim to promote the next generation to impress audiences on the great international stages in the future, will be open to the public.

Transforming grey into art

Since 2015, the Vision Art Festival has transformed Crans-Montana into an open-air art gallery. It is a unique concept, where artists from all over the world meet in a breathtaking setting, at altitudes between 1,500 and 3,000 m, to brighten up the surfaces of unused buildings in Crans-Montana.

The architectural heritage of Crans-Montana

The destination of Crans-Montana was born when two friends on a hunting trip fell in love with the location. Since then, the majestic plateau overlooking the Rhone Valley has developed considerably, and offers several architectural gems today. Sylvie Doriot Galofaro, ethnologist and Doctor in art history, is offering an opportunity to explore the evolution of the urbanisation of the resort around some of its illustrious characters, such as the painter Ferdinand Hodler, the writer Katherine Mansfield and the graphic designer Jean-Marie Thorember. The buildings, and also the spectacular setting in which they were designed, make this guided tour a wonderful cultural experience.

Fondation Opale

Expression through art

From 12 June to 6 November 2022, Fondation Opale presents FUGITIVE PRESENT, an exhibition with photography from urban centers across Australia which explores central themes of Austrlian history such as the stolen generation, intersectional racism or dispossession, alonside unique Wamulu paintings (a yellow flower from the Central Desert used for ephemeral ceremonials).

Through exhibitions and also workshops, meetings and publications, the Fondation Opale intends to establish a permanent dialogue between Aboriginal and contemporary art. The art centre in Lens owes its second life to the support and passion of Bérangère Primat. A Crans-Montana resident, this collector specialising in Aboriginal art wanted to give this art a European dimension.
